lyrics:
Time stands still
In that tired place
Where the echoes will
Fill the empty space
With the dreams that seemed to fade away
The innocence lost
All through those streets
Is the greatest paradox
Suffering defeats
From the dreams that seemed to fade away
Oh, those memories
Surrounding me
From the ups to the downs
Swirling all around
This town
The tears of love
Contradict the pain
Trying to rise above
The invisible shame
Of the dreams that seemed to fade away
N’those regrets of loss
Never heal the new
As I stumble across
Forgotten sights into
The dreams that seemed to fade away
Oh, those memories
Surrounding me
From the ups to the downs
Swirling all around
This town
Oh, the past is the present
And the pain gives the lessen
All the years, all the ways
My last life filled those days
Oh, those memories
Surrounding me
From the ups to the downs
Swirling all around
This town
Oh, those memories
Surrounding me
From the ups to the downs
Swirling all around
This town
This town
This town
Oh, those memories
Still haunting me
liner notes:
I was married for 28 eight years and I raised my family in Springfield, Illinois for the large majority of that time. I was not living there when I divorced but after five years I went back to visit and it was a very emotional experience. I remember when the plane was coming in to land, I began to cry and as I drove and walked through that formative down where my wife and I raised out children, I had a profound sense of loss come back. We don’t sign up for divorce.
